Mammoth is a large picnic shelter equipped with grills and plenty of seating, conveniently located near the starting point of Mammoth Cave's park tours. Visitors can take a hike, join a cave tour, and still have time to fire up the grill for a picnic. The shelters are within Mammoth Cave National Park, which is best known for its caves that extend for 390 miles. Their formation began millions of years ago when mildly acidic groundwater dissolved on beds of limestone, creating subterranean passages. Native inhabitants of the cave include bats, spiders, and blindfish. |
